Summer heat in Europe has reached another alarming level. Italy placed all 27 cities monitored by its Health Ministry under the highest heat alert in early August as temperatures pushed toward 40°C in several areas. The red warning covered major population centers and signaled a health threat that extended beyond elderly or medically vulnerable residents.
The scorching conditions stretched far beyond Italy. Austria broke its national temperature record on August 4, when Vienna reached 41°C, and broke it again one day later. Bad Deutsch-Altenburg recorded 41.2°C on August 5, according to Austria’s national weather service, GeoSphere Austria.
The extreme temperatures form part of a much wider European heat crisis. Long spells of hot, dry weather have affected large areas of central, southern, and eastern Europe. Drought, shrinking rivers, wildfires, and punishing nighttime temperatures have added to the strain.
Italy’s Red Alerts Signal a Serious Health Threat

Cities affected included Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Florence, Bologna, Palermo, Venice, Bari, and Genoa. Italian authorities advised residents to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, especially from late morning through the afternoon. Staying hydrated and reducing strenuous outdoor activity also became increasingly important as the heat intensified.
Urban areas can make dangerous heat feel even worse. Concrete, asphalt, roofs, and buildings absorb solar energy during the day and release it later as heat. This effect can keep densely built neighborhoods unusually warm long after sunset.
Hot nights create another problem because the human body gets less time to recover. Homes without effective cooling can remain uncomfortable throughout the night. Several consecutive nights of poor relief can increase the strain caused by daytime temperatures.
Italy has already endured repeated bouts of severe heat during the summer of 2026. By early August, the country was facing its fourth heatwave of the season. The latest episode was linked to a North African anticyclone spreading intense heat across the Mediterranean region. Sicily’s civil protection authorities have repeatedly issued alerts covering heatwave and wildfire risks during the summer. Earlier warnings forecast local temperatures reaching 42 to 44°C during intense periods of heat.
Austria Breaks Its National Heat Record Twice

In Austria, Vienna’s Stadlau district reached 41°C on August 4, setting a new national record. The milestone did not survive for long because temperatures climbed even higher the following day.
On August 5, Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in eastern Austria recorded a temperature of 41.2°C. That measurement pushed the national record higher for a second straight day. Two consecutive record-breaking days showed the extraordinary strength of the heat gripping the region.
However, Austria was not alone in reaching historic territory. Slovakia reached a national record high of 42.2°C during the same broad heat event. Hungary also surpassed a temperature record dating back more than a century as extreme heat spread across central and eastern Europe.
River levels have also dropped sharply in parts of Europe. The Danube fell to exceptionally low levels in drought-affected areas, while power generation faced difficulties because some facilities rely on river water for cooling. Hungary was among the countries where energy production came under pressure.
The heat has become an infrastructure problem as well as a weather story. High temperatures can raise electricity demand while drought reduces available water. Those pressures can arrive at the same time, making an already difficult situation more complicated.
Dry soil can intensify the effect. Moist ground uses part of the sun’s energy to evaporate water, which helps limit surface heating. When the soil becomes extremely dry, more of that energy goes directly into warming the ground and nearby air.
